This explains what Nova stores about you, where it goes, and what you can ask us to do with it. It describes what the app actually does — not what a template says a website usually does.

Who we are Nova is operated by Muhammad Usman Shafique, 250 Stockport Road, Timperley, Altrincham, WA15 7UN. For anything on this page, or to exercise any of the rights below, email xsmoosa.usman@gmail.com. We are the data controller for the information described here.

What we store, and where

Nova keeps information in two separate places, and the difference matters.

On our server

WhatWhy
Your email address and nameTo identify your account and sign you in
Your password, hashedSo we can check it without ever storing the password itself
Your plan, and counters for AI useTo apply the limits your plan includes
Stripe customer and subscription identifiersTo keep your subscription in step with your account
Notes, tasks, flashcards and study sessions you saveSo they are there on your other devices
Your Notion token, encrypted, only if you connect NotionTo read the pages you choose
A "Think a mark is wrong?" report, only if you send one: what you wrote and the marking it was aboutTo find and fix mistakes in Nova's marking

On your own device

A lot of Nova never leaves your browser. Your subject choices and target grades, your marked paper results, the answers and any handwriting you write into a paper, your activity history, predicted grades, study plans, flashcard decks, favourites and display preferences are stored locally in your browser.

We cannot read those unless you send them to us — for example by asking Nova to mark a paper. Clearing your browser data deletes them, and we cannot recover them.

Payments

We never see your card details. Payments are handled by Stripe on their own pages. We store only the identifiers Stripe gives us so we know which subscription belongs to which account.

AI, and what gets sent where

Nova's marking, feedback, predicted grades, study plans and chat are produced by Anthropic's Claude models. When you use one of those features we send Anthropic what that feature needs — which may include images of the pages you upload, the answers you have written, your scores, and your subjects.

We send your work, not your identity: your email address and name are not included in those requests.

Anthropic processes this to produce a response for you. Their handling is governed by their own terms and privacy policy.

AI output is not a mark Marking and predicted grades are produced by a language model and can be wrong. They are an estimate to revise from, not an official result, and no exam board has checked them.

Who else is involved

  • Anthropic — the AI that marks papers and answers questions.
  • Stripe — payments and subscriptions.
  • Resend — sends an internal notification to us when someone signs up, which contains that person's name and email address.
  • Notion — only if you choose to connect it, and only the pages you pick.
  • Our hosting providers — who run the website and the server, and necessarily process requests to them.

We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising.

Past papers

Nova links to past papers and mark schemes hosted by exam boards and by Physics & Maths Tutor. Those files are downloaded from those sites, not from us, and their operators may record that request in their own logs. Copyright in the papers belongs to the exam boards.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and the work saved to it for as long as your account exists. If you ask us to delete your account we remove it and the work stored on our server. Records we must keep for tax or accounting reasons — such as payment records — are kept for as long as the law requires.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:

  • give you a copy of what we hold about you;
  • correct anything that is wrong;
  • delete your account and its data;
  • restrict or object to what we do with it;
  • withdraw consent where you gave it, such as for Notion.

Email us and we will respond within one month. If you are not happy with the response you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

If you are under 18

Nova is built for GCSE students, so most people using it are under 18. You need to be at least 13 to have an account.

If you are under 18, you need permission from a parent or guardian before subscribing to a paid plan. A parent or guardian can email us to ask what we hold about their child, or to have the account deleted.

We do not profile students for advertising, and we do not share their work with anyone beyond the providers listed above.

Cookies and local storage

Nova does not use advertising or tracking cookies. It stores a sign-in token and the data described above in your browser, because the app needs them to work. There is no analytics or advertising tracking on the app.

Changes

If we change this page we will update the date at the top. If a change materially affects you we will tell you by email.
